Post 8: About Communication

What do you expect to learn from the podcast project?
  • I expect to learn a lot about natural speaking pace and about having real conversations. In class, we usually practice one structure at a time, but in the video we are going to have to combine all of them.
  • I think I'm going to learn a lot about memorizing many lines at once--the video is much longer than the dialogues we practiced during the exams--and I also think that we're going to use the podcast project to discuss topics that don't appear in our textbooks.
  • I also hope that I learn something about Japanese food, which is the topic of our podcast.

What does "communication" mean to you?

Communication means being able to convey a message to another person about something in a clear and meaningful way. The audience the message is intended for should also be able to relate to it easily. Good communication is not confusingand conveys the intended message without being misinterpreted. It should also be easy for the intended audience to fully grasp and understand the intended message. (done with group 「みんなのりょうり」)

  1. I hadn't considering the role of relate-ability in communication before – I think that sometimes the most effective communication is that which is able to be productive even when one party has no ability to relate to the other. Being relatable is, however, definitely a hallmark of strong communication.

  2. こんにち は ソリンさん!
I agree that this video project will be a great opportunity to learn more natural ways of speaking rather than the structured conversations that we hold in class and during exams. I'm excited to watch the video that you and your group are planning. Cooking will be really fun and you get to try what you make. Maybe the class can try some too?? :)
Also, I like the point you made in your communication explanation about how the audience should be able to relate to the message in your video. And by using clear communication the message easier to understand.

I can't wait to see what you guys come up with! Good luck!

  3. Hi ソリンさん!
I also agree that we will learn to mix patterns, and to determine which situations are more appropriate for each one, something that we do not see to much in class since we study one at a time.
About “relatability", do you think that communication can reach viewers that are not familiar with the topic? For example, if you wanted to raise awareness about something that was totally foreign to your audience, would you try and seek out parallels that they could relate to, or would you focus on the foreignness say to create a shock factor (like we see with say humanitarian aid campaigns)? Which do you think is more effective?

  4. Yes, you will definitely integrate so much knowledge into your podcasting project. I really like that you are paying attention to intended audience. Through the project, you will have different kinds of audiences, including your teammates, classmates, and other people who might watch your podcasting. I hope you will take them all into consideration and find an effective way to communicate with them. I'm looking forward to watching your project-food! Good luck!!
